Apple has introduced an update for the iOS version of GarageBand that makes it compatible with the iPhone and iPad touch. The now universal app is available as a free update for owners of the iPad version, or it’s $4.99 if you’re buying it for the first time.

What will this app do to your iPhone or iPad after you’ve downloaded it? Well it will basically turn your device intro a recording studio. The app supplies music fans with a wealth of Touch Instruments that sound great even without any effects applied.

Beginners and experienced musicians alike can “play and record keyboards, guitars, drums and basses in a wide variety of styles”. There are also all sort of amps, effects, 8-track recording, loop libraries and export features.
If you need more, there are custom chords, 3/4 and 6/8 time signatures, quantization options for recording, adjustable velocity settings for instruments and just about everything you could want out of a mobile music creation and editing tool.

The iPad version lets you plug in your electric guitar and record through classic amps and stompbox effects, and even adds your voice to the mix, or any acoustic sound using the built-in mic. Musicians can record up to eight tracks simultaneously and projects can easily be shared by e-mail or they can be exported via iTunes sharing to continue work on Mac with the desktop version of GarageBand or Logic Pro.But what if you have no clue how to play instruments? Not a problem.

There’s the Smart Instrument feature that can turn into your virtual real-time teacher and will teach you to play. (as well as an AutoPlay function which lets you pretend to be a musician).
