For around a year or more, the media was inundated with rumors that Apple's iPhone 6 and/or iPhone 6 Plus would come with a sapphire glass display. In fact, it was even confirmed that Apple built a factory designed to do exactly that. However, when the final reveal occurred, that turned out not to be true. Why would Apple build a factory to crank out sapphire glass, if they didn't plan on using it on their most popular product?

It turns out the truth is quite simple. Amongst a number of other factors, the main reason is because it will take several years before the new factory can ramp up production to high enough levels to develop sapphire glass displays for the volume of iPhones that Apple sells. There's even more to it than just that though, and we found a handy infographic that shares quite a bit of info regarding sapphire glass and the reasons why Apple couldn't use it just yet.

Because of its size, we couldn't host the graphic in the OP of this story, so please check out the full graphic in the thread below.
