Facetime problem...Please help...

My facetime hasn't been working for a few days... The facetime 'button' under settings, phone... is switched to off and when I try to switch it back to on it just says "waiting for activation" and after a few minutes it just switches back to off... Can anyone help with this? A few people tell me that I will have to do a restore to get it working again but if I do a restore, won't I have to restore to the latest 4.2.1 firmware through itunes? is there a way around that?

not sure why your trying to avoid iOS 4.2 but your friends are probably correct. I had issues with my phone locking up randomly and apps crashing and just all around giving me weird problems but once i updated to 4.2 all that went away and my phone is as rock solid as my iphone 2g was. i would bite the bullet and just do a software upgrade.
