Does anyone know if powerbanks can charge the iphone 5?

Definitely solid advice, the only issue I have is that it costs so much for OEM... But in the long run it will probably be the smarter choice.

I got a cheapy one off ebay and it works both sides. Not sure if this is the same as mine.

Cheap cables could affect your iPhone, it might affect the time it takes to charge it or could damage your battery so you should definantly go for recommended and not very expensive or cheap.
