do i need to activate a phone right after i get it?

i have a basic phone, and i decided to get an iphone 5. my billing cycle ends in 10 days. and then i want to get a share everything plan. i know it's hard to get the phone now, so i want to start hunting. what if i manage to get the phone with 2 year contract soon, do i need to activate and get a data plan right away or i can activate it when my billing cycle ends?

Excellent, I can speak about them. VZW requires that all users going from dumb or feature phone sign up for a data plan at the time of sale on all smart phones. The good news is they will prorate the plan when it goes active, so you will not be paying anymore than you should.
