Did latest update now there is the iTunes symbol with an upward arrow and a picture of a charger cord. Does anyone know what is wrong???????

This means you'll have to use recovery mode to restore or update it. Here are the instructions:

I'm seeing the recovery screen but haven't been given any options. Alas I guess I'm going to have to go to Organized Chaos, otherwise known as the Apple Store.

Did you connect your iPhone to iTunes on the computer?

If recovery mode didn't work at first, try it once more, maybe it'll work this time.

If the DFU mode doesn't work, you may have hardware issues. A Genius Bar appointment at an Apple Store would then be warranted.
