Completely new w/ jailbreak questions

I got my iPhone 4 the 1st day it was available. I jailbroke it the 1st day i saw a jailbreak available. I think it was JailbreakMe. I am on iOS 4.0 and i have not updated my iOS since. Mainly because I didn't know what would happen to my phone. But after asking different people and googling it to death, I come here for assistance on my dilemma.

I want to know what I have to do to update my iOS to the most current one, and still be able to have it jailbroken. I also want to know what will become of the content in my phone(pics, contacts, apps, tweaks, texts).

Any help, criticism, links, videos would be appreciated

If you did what you had to do, that is save SHSH, you could go to 4.3.2 using sn0wbreeze 2.6. But if not you can go to 4.3.3. Some myself included noticed problems of 4.3.3 with 3G and wifi.

By the way you don't update with iTunes and then jailbreak. You want to preserve your modem firmware (baseband) so you can unlock carrier. That's done via sn0wbreeze. Use sn0wbreeze 2.7.1 for latest 4.3.3 or sn0wbreeze 2.6 for 4.3.2.

To tell you the truth next iOS version will be out soon. Kinda kills me upgrading. Research into what new you gonna be getting with update. Maybe not worth it.

So that means no SHSH has been saved and you can only go to latest firmware. SHSH is a signature key with which you can install operating system onto your phone. It's similar to activation keys on windows.


Baseband or modem firmware, that is operating code for your phone's modem, must be of a certain version to be unlockable. We only concern ourselves with baseband in you rely on carrier unlock. It can be seen in settings, general, about.


Basically download Sn0wbreeze 2.7.1, and follow on screen instructions.

my phone isn't unlocked . im on at&t . and after looking through my phone i see that i have SSH in SB Settings . I think i tried to go through this process a while ago and gave up because of difficulty.

So If if i jailbreak with Sn0wbreeze 2.7.1, will i lose all my current apps & tweaks?

You will lose all jailbreak apps and tweaks. But you can backup then restore your backup after jailbreak.

There are some apps to in cydia which helps backing up your cydia apps or tweaks, xBackup is one of the free and easiest one, pkgBackup is good and easy as well. You will have to download and install anyone of them into your device. Follow instructions in anyone of the apps to back up and read in help section of the app to know how to restore.
