Clicking Sound

How come when I shut the iPhone off, sometimes I hear a mechanical clicking sound? Sometimes no sound.

The sound you hear when turning off your phone is normal, if you sometimes don't hear the sound it could be because the volume is turned all the way down or the mute function has been activated.

It's built into the system by Apple as an audible signal that the phone was turned off. As far as I'm aware, it serves no other purpose.
