Can i send messages thru imessage ONLY?

So a few of my cousins have iPhones; I live in the US and they live in South America. I use iMessage to talk to them for free, but for some reason (either I don't have web service or they don't) occasionally my iMessage will be sent as a text.

Normally, I don't mind; but in this case, it costs a lot for international text. Is there a way that I can get my phone to notify me if I want to send it as a text instead? I just don't want my phone to automatically send it as a text if iMessage is not functioning at the time I send it

I feel dumb now, solved it. Settings > messages. There is an option in there to turn it off
