Revolution Software has today made a lot of point-and-click adventure gamers very happy by announcing the forthcoming release of its next game – Broken Sword - The Smoking Mirror: Remastered, due out “very shortly” for iPhone, iPad and iPod touch, with the PC and Mac versions following early next year. In a posting on the Revolution website, Revolution’s managing director Charles Cecil writes that the revamped version of the classic game now has fully animated facial expressions, enhanced graphics throughout, great music, a context-sensitive hint system and diary. Dropbox integration has also been introduced to facilitate a cross-platform save-game feature so that you can play the game on several different devices at once. Full Game Center integration is also in place, including in-game achievements.

The second instalment in the much-loved Broken Sword series sees the return of hero George Stobbart and heroine Nico Collard from the first game. The story kicks off when journalist Nico finds an ancient artefact when investigating a ruthless drug cartel, leading her and George into an adventure where they will encounter powerful forces and ruthless enemies, and lots of fiendish puzzles of course!

As with the iOS version of the first Broken Sword, Broken Sword - The Smoking Mirror: Remastered will also include an interactive digital comic courtesy of Dave Gibbons.

You really get the feeling that the developers of these classic games are totally revelling in introducing their labours of love to a whole new audience via iPhone and iPad, and this quote from Charles Cecil on the Revolution website really sums it up:

“Publishing through the App Store has offered us huge opportunities. As well as allowing us to communicate directly with our audience, we are now in the position where we can re-work our original games while simultaneously writing new adventure titles. It is an extraordinary time for the games industry and for independent developers in particular.”
