Most of us already own outdated Apple gear and we would like to do something about that. The first thing which comes to mind is re-selling them, but that is a time consuming endeavor. Apple might end up provided a solution itself – it’s called the Trade-in program. The program has been rumored of being released soon but according to new information provided by TechCrunch, trade-in has already started being piloted in several selected Apple Stores around the country. According to their sources, the program might not become available in every shop but just in specific locations. Trade-ins in the selected Apple Stores will be available for several weeks.

What does the Trade-IN program imply? Well, it would allow owners of older Apple smartphone such as the iPhone 4 or iPhone 4S to trade in their gear. For example, an owner of the aforementioned devices could get in return a $120 to $200 gift card, the final price depending on the color of the device and its usage state. For a 16GB iPhone 5 in a decent state, the customer can hope to get a gift card as big as $250. This, however, might be less than other trade sites like Gazelle and NextWorth might offer.

So what would be the advantage? Getting the refund on the spot. No waiting included. And the gift card can be exchanged into credit, so you can use it to buy a new device. If you have an upgrade credit available, that is.
