AppleInsider reports today that according to DigiTimes, Apple is currently considering using a new component supplier to make iPhone ambient light sensors. According to the report, Apple is in talks with Capella Microsystems about supplying the sensors for future iPhone versions because it is not happy with the performance of the current sensor in the iPhone 4. If Capella manages to seal the deal, it would be the first Taiwan-based integrated circuit supplier to work with Apple. However, DigiTimes says that Apple is also having talks with another light sensor supplier, Integrated Memory Logic, also based in Taiwan. Whichever firm lands the contract, DigiTimes says that Apple may well order the new component before the end of 2011. Also covering the story, MacStories notes that the iPhone 4 and Android phones in general came under fire last year because their auto-brightness systems don't take light conditions at the side of a device into account, which apparently results in them having their brightness settings stuck on the highest level due to various bugs, resulting in major battery drain. It's possible Apple is looking to correct this issue in the next iPhone by using different components from a new supplier.
