9to5 Mac reports today that Apple has just announced a new trade-in program for third-party adaptors following on from the recent stories of people getting injured and killed in China when charging their iPhones with third-party chargers. According to 9to5 Mac, the trade-in program starts on August 16th in the US, and August 9th in China, and will take place in official Apple Retail Stores and Authorised Apple Resellers. To benefit from the offer, simply take your third-party adaptor along, as well as your iPhone, iPad or iPod touch, and ask to trade it in for an official Apple adaptor for a discounted fee of $10 (or equivalent in local currency). Don’t waste any time though, as you’ll only have until October 18th before the offer closes.

“Customer safety is a top priority at Apple. That’s why all of our products - including USB power adaptors for iPhone, iPad, and iPod - undergo rigorous testing for safety and reliability and are designed to meet government safety standards around the world.”
9to5 Mac says that Apple will most likely recycle the third-party adaptors that are traded in.
