We are highly skeptical of this rumor, but it's worth reporting just in case. According to the latest report, Apple could be working on a 6-core design for next year's A10 system on chip (SoC). This would be a big shift in procedure for the folks in Cupertino, as they have stuck to their guns with a dual core design for years while Android OEMs have (perhaps wastefully) pushed quad-core, hexa-core, and octa-core chips.

The latest A9 CPU uses two ARM-based 64-bit cores clocked at 1.8GHz each. By moving to a 6-core setup, Apple supposedly wants to improve their multithreading performance. Further speculation suggests they might also be making this design change as a means to improve battery life for future iPhones and iPads. By adding extra cores and using a smaller 14nm or 10nm design, they can make the chip more efficient, while still retaining powerful performance.

We will keep an eye on this intel to see if we can find any further corroborative evidence.
