If you want an unlocked, SIM-free version of the iPhone 5s, the good news is that Apple has started selling it on its retail website. The bad news is that you will have to pay at least $649 to get it, if you want to stop paying for the usual two-year contract.

Those who travel frequently or simply don't like being tied to carrier contracts are going to be the first ones to rush and order their iPhone 5s handsets. Apple is selling the unlocked, with no SIM card option iPhone 5s for the following prices: the 16 GB, 32 GB and 64 GB versions for $649, $749 and $849.

There is a drawback with this deal, though. The new unlocked iPhone 5S requires a GSM-compatible SIM, which means it'll work on AT&T and T-Mobile. Unfortunately, it will not work on Sprint or Verizon. At the moment, it is not clear what will happen if you will choose to use a SIM card with your iPhone 5s while traveling abroad.

Apple Canada has been selling unlocked iPhone 5S models on it's online store since day one. In fact, the Apple online store in Canada has been selling unlocked iPhones only for several years at least.

In the UK its the same, you can always get the newest unlocked iPhone from release day.

Yes lucky you but since the IP5 came out, the issue for those of us in the US is what frequencies will it work on in terms of world travel. The contract sim phone isn't a world phone and it would be nice to know if this newly available one can be used outside of the US by swapping sims.
