Has anyone heard whether the anemoji' message made on the X will work on older iPhones and android phones?

To send animojis, you will need an the iPhone X, as it uses the sensors that are also in use for Face ID, and no other iPhone has those.

The recipient has to run iOS 11, and does not necessarily have to use an iPhone X to view the message. It will appear as video with audio on the recipient’s device.

The Animojis are sent through iMessage so they can only be received by another Apple device. You won't be able to send them to an Android phone.
