Forbes reports today that according to new figures from IDC, four Android phones were sold for every iPhone in the second quarter of 2012, a big rise from the ratio of 2.5:1 for the year-ago period. The figures show that Samsung is top of the Android pops, selling nearly 105 million Android phones in the April-June quarter. Samsung is the number 1 smartphone manufacturer, with Apple in second place. The figures also show that Google’s Android mobile OS has seen an impressive rise in worldwide market share from the same period a year ago, up to a 68% share from a 47% share. iPhone sales fell during the period in question to 17%, down from 19% from last year, but this is only to be expected with the launch of a new iPhone on the horizon, when those in the know usually wait before buying their next phone. However, while the increased sales are good news for Android, Forbes writes that according to Finnish security firm F-Secure, there has also been a massive rise in reported malicious Android software in the second quarter of 2012, up 64% from the first quarter of the year, to 5,000 samples. As Forbes notes, the majority of the Android malware comes from third-party download sites, and not from Google’s official Play store.

^This...perfectly right!

They ask for it to get malware :)

Android phones are available on EVERY carrier, iPhones arent. I hate reading these "x phone is outselling iPhone" stories. Its a one sided story that cant be compared. A better story is "Every carrier that sells iPhone is outselling Android by a mile"

Not only every carrier sells android phones, but different brands use the android OS (HTC, LG, Samsung.,,etc) as opposed to iOS only being available on iPhone. So as wingzfan said, it really is incomparable

And it's for that reason that there is so much fragmentation in android. It's also the reason that some of us switched to iPhone and realized we are better off on iOS.
