AppleInsider reports that according to new figures from Nielsen, Android’s growth in the US is still ahead of Apple’s iOS’s, as the smartphone market continues to grow. In the second quarter of the year, 54.9% of mobile users owned smartphones at the end of June, with more users having Android phones than iOS phones, which is a change in favour of Android from the previous quarter’s figures, when iOS game out on top. Android’s marketshare is now 51.8%, ahead of Apple’s 34.3%, BlackBerry is far behind, with an 8.1% share of the market. In terms of smartphone owners, as opposed to mobile phone owners overall, Android was also ahead with 54.6% of the market share, with Apple’s iOS having 36.3% of the market share. Together, Android and iOS accounted for more than 90% of the total smartphone market in the US, according to AppleInsider, ahead of RIM’s BlackBerry with 4% and Windows Phone and collective others with 5% when lumped together.

Logically... it's no surprise that Android OS has a thicker market share that iOS. Simply because iOS is sold on ONE device... and Android OS is sold on how many?!? A few dozen?

And that's exactly what contributes to the fragmentation that caused some android developers, including myself, to dump android and switch to iOS. It's much easier to test your apps on a few devices instead of a few dozen.
