Following on from Apple CEO Tim Cook’s comments yesterday that did not rule out the idea of Apple launching an iPhone with a larger screen, AppleInsider today reports that according to Jefferies analyst Peter Misek, Apple will indeed be releasing an iPhone 6 with a 4.8-inch screen, but unfortunately that won’t be until sometime in 2014. Apparently this was always going to be the release timeframe, although more recently, Apple had been thinking of moving the release forward to the end of 2013, in order to combat the threat from Samsung. This new plan was scuppered, according to Misek, because Apple’s suppliers have been having problems with getting the 4-inch screen to scale up to 4.8 inches. Elaborating further on the problems, Misek said that scaling the in-cell screens had affected the yields badly, with a large number of display components not passing Apple’s strict quality assurance tests, thus meaning that there would not be the required amount of phones available to launch as soon as this year. The iPhone 5 also initially had yield issues that affected supply due to Apple’s stringent QA standards, with the head of Foxconn saying that the iPhone 5 was the hardest iPhone to date to manufacture.
