Im interested in buying the 4S and i was planning to go and get one off a local seller later today.

However the phone is locked to a phone company that i'm not interested in using. I read that jailbreaking and unlocking can be done fairly easily for the phone to allow me to use whatever carrier i'd like. However i was told that the iPhone will get locked again upon software updates. Is this true? And if so, is the jailbreak/unlock process a long and complicated one that i'd have to repeat everytime i do an update? Or is it an easy and short process that should not be too much of a nuisance?

Thanks

In a month or less, Apple will be selling an unlocked iphone to all cell providers that have the iphone on there bill. If you have had a data pkg with you provider they will unlock it for you because i just had Verizon do this for just a couple of days ago.

And FYI, purchasing an factory unlocked 4S is your only option for now.

The iPhone4S CANNOT be jailbroken and subsequently unofficially unlocked as things stand today.
