My voice sounds like a Darlek to others

recently my OHs iPhone 4, which doesn't get used very often, has started having a problem. When he calls me or I call him his voice is so distorted it sounds like a Darlek and is totally not understandable. I don't know if it is only between the two of us because he doesn't use it to speak to anyone else.
It would seem to me there may be something gone wrong with the mic?

Any suggestions?

Each time lately, although it is used so infrequently it's hard to know.

Here's something else you could try: when making a phone call, switch to speakerphone (speaker). If his voice doesn't sound distorted at all, you might have a problem with the earpiece.
