My family is international, all Mac users. Devices include an iPod touch, 2 iPhones and an iPad, all with Mac.com addresses, yet I mostly get green convo bubbles and I fear this is $$$. Can anyone sort this out for me to save us all from unexpected surprises? And can I text int'l phone #, if it's an iPhone w/iMessage without incurring a charge?

You nned to set up iMessage on your iPhone, and you contacts also need to set iMessage on their iPhone as well. Go to settings> messages and there you can turn on iMessage. Notice that iMessage need an active internet connection in order to work, Wifi or 3G on your iPhone and on your contacts iPhone.
