Alert for misssed event when phone is off

Ok looking for a way to make sure I do not miss an event of appointment. When I turn the phone on in the morning and an event had a reminder scheduled to go off before the time I turning the phone on I do not get an alert. Do I have something setup wrong?

If you're turning the power totally off then you won't get any reminders, notifications, etc. while it is off.

Ok…Then why do I not get the alerts or notifications when the phone is turned on? Should they not come in even though the time has passed? They have not been acknowledged? If not is there an app that will look back and give me the missed notifications for the calendar appointments?

I should have added I do not want to Jailbreak the phone (at least not yet). I have only had it a few days.....
