Whatsapp + normal messaging

I think I might have missed an option or something, but surely there is a way to send a message that defaults to whatsapp if available or normal sms if not? As it is I need to check the whatsapp favorites and IF the user is not there then open the normal messaging app and send from that, Whatsapp doesnt even allow you the option to send a standard sms from the whatsapp contact list making it a real pain to use as I invariably end up need to search twice for a user - once in whatsapp and if they are not there then in the normal messaging contact list.

Yes I know it sends msgs to other what's app users. What's stoping it invoking normal messaging for non what's app users though?
