At last week's Hey Siri event, Apple announced the rumored 4th-generation Apple TV, along with its renamed operating system 'tvOS'. The selling point of this upgraded device is its dedicated App Store, which will finally bring our lovely mobile apps and games to the big screen.

However, with the re-addition of a hard drive in the Apple TV, watching actual movies and TV shows stored on the device should be the primary use. Non-profit organization VideoLAN announced on Monday that the team would be porting VLC to the Apple TV.

"Some code to build VLCKit for the new tvOS was merged," reads the organization's blog post. This is great news as VLC supports nearly every single media format and codec available, with more being added daily. No word on whether the app will be available at the time Apple TV launches in October or some time later in the near future.
