iMore reports that the U.S. government is putting pressure on Apple to provide more help to bypass encryption features of iPhones and iPads. Specifically, the authorities are using an old 18th-century law known as the All Writs Act, to force Apple to agree to bypass its own encryption features.

According to the original report on Ars Technica, two federal judges in the U.S. have already ruled that two phone manufacturers (one of which is Apple, and one of which is secret) must help the government with specific criminal investigations.

Ars Technica has other documents that show requests by courts to force Apple to bypass its security for devices in order to give the government information that might be vital to solving a case.

Apparently the papers also show that the Act in question can only be used to compel phone manufacturers such as Apple to bypass their own security features if there is sufficient justification for so doing.
