This might not be such a big surprise for many out there, but it’s good to have it as a confirmation, even if this comes from an analyst and not Apple itself or the carriers. According to Canaccord Genuity’s T. Michael Walkley, the iPhone 5s was the no.1 selling phone at all U.S carriers. He said the following in an internal note to clients”

“Our September surveys indicated very strong initial sales and back orders for the iPhone 5s and strong iPhone 5c sales at the four tier-1 U.S. carriers and also in international markets."

Canaccord’s reports contains a surprise, as well. Initial reports were suggesting that the iPhone 5c didn’t sell so well, but it seems that the plasticky iPhone managed to take the second or third place after with all the American carriers that are selling Apple’s phones.

Samsung's Galaxy S4 managed to outsell the iPhone 5c only at Verizon and T-Mobile, probably because of the shortages in certain colors and memory configurations. Referring to this, Walkley also said:

"We believe these price cuts combined with Samsung's aggressive marketing and effective advertising campaign for its existing and new high-tier smartphones, such as the recently-launched Galaxy Note 3, could potentially help Samsung reduce high-tier smartphone share losses to Apple in October despite the strong iPhone 5s and 5c demand."

While Apple has not yet released any breakdown of its record iPhone sales, some had the impression the iPhone 5c had performed much worse than the iPhone 5s. Canaccord’s survey seems to prove that this was a wrong assumption. Also, KGI analyst, Mingchi Kuo thinks that worldwide iPhone sales are pretty evenly split and that by the end of Q4, total sales of the both iPhone models will reach 50-55 millions.
