Should I hear alert???

hi random question... Had a call from my bf last night who was uses a jabra stone wireless bluetooth head set, with iPhone 4, he said he tried to send me a text, which was undelivered, he got a failed text back & I heard the text tone for this. Usually I don't hear any alerts from his phone tone when he's on a call to me - Which I understand is normal? so my question is - can you ever hear an alert tone from another iPhone when you're recieving a call from it? So during a call. Hope that makes sense! Thanks

If I am talking on the phone and a text comes in I get the alert that I set up on my phone screen and I believe I hear a tone but it is not loud enough that the person I am speaking with can hear it.
