I use Apple Mail with a POP3 server and SMTP for outgoing. My POP3 server is set to only save a month or so of emails. The SMTP saves nothing. But all emails sent and received stay on the phone until deleted. I don't use iCloud at all.
In the past, backups didn't save the emails on the phone. Express Transfer to a new phone didn't transfer email at all. Today I used Express Transfer to set up a new 18 from a 17. I was surprised to find that all my saved emails (over 1,500 in three different accounts) transferred. No sent emails transferred, however.
I assume this is related to iOS 27.0.1 and not necessarily to the iPhone 18 itself. But since I never saw reference to this anywhere, I don't know for sure.
