Samsung to supply NAND again.JPG

According to a report in ETNews, via MacRumors, Samsung will be supplying Apple with NAND flash memory chips in 2017, five years after it last supplied Apple with the chips, for the iPhone 5 back in 2012. Apparently Samsung stopped making the chips for Apple because it wasn’t willing to comply with Apple’s electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding needs by changing packaging or adding special coating to the memory packages.

As MacRumors notes, the fact that Samsung is back on board again could have something to do with an earlier report from ETNews saying that Apple is intending to shield more parts inside its devices for the purposes of performance and EMI compliance.

While it seems that Samsung’s current sputter coat EMI shielding techniques were not adequate for Apple’s stringent requirements, the development of new spray techniques for ultra-thin metal shielding could well have led Apple back to Samsung for this particular product.
