MacRumors reports today on a new warning from Qualcomm to analysts in which it says that it is having supply problems with some of its mobile phone chips, in particular the new 28-nm modem chips that are expected to be used in the next gen of LTE phones. According to the report, Qualcomm chief executive Paul Jacobs told analysts during a conference call, “at this stage we cannot secure enough supply to meet the increasing demand we are experiencing.” This news has caused analysts to predict that Qualcomm’s supply problems could actually affect the release timetable of new smartphones in the short term, with Piper Jaffray’s Gene Munster saying that the next iPhone will not now be here until October, marking a shift from his previous belief that Apple would be launching the next iPhone in August, right in the middle of the general consensus in the industry that points to either June or October for the arrival of the next iPhone. As MacRumors points out, it’s quite likely that Apple was always planning to release the next iPhone in October all along, but for those that were still expecting a summer launch, this may well put an end to that speculation for good.
