Procedures in Swapping iPhones

I just ordered an iPhone 5 with a new number/contract. I plan on swapping the 5 with my 4s and give my 4s to my son. My question is, what would be the correct procedures in doing the swap? Do I first activate the 5 then call Sprint to do the swap then do a restore or do I restore from a backup of the 4s during the initial boot up and then call Sprint?
