Personal Hotspot won't accept wi-fi connections

I can get my personal hotspot working fine using a bluetooth connect, but when I try to connect my macbook pro with wi-fi the connection always times out. I have tried changing the password and resetting the network settings, but nothing happens. My iPad can't even find the hotspot wi fi. Any suggestions?
