no service 3gs

this is what i have done. I upgraded from 4.1 to 5.1, then i jail broke it. after which when i insert my sim card it tells me no service. i have searched and can not find anyone else ask this question. any clues?

Are you on At&t... or were you unlocked using the 3GS on a different carrier?

im not sure i bought it from someone who had it unlocked. then i updated it to the latest firmware
