According to a new survey from the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety, as reported on by MacRumors, Siri is more of a distraction to drivers than Google Now, but less of a distraction than Microsoft’s Cortana.

The study looked into the issue of mental distraction when driving, in relation to voice-activated systems in particular, as well as specific makes of vehicle. At the very lowest end of the scale, the Chevy Equinox ranked just 2.4 for “Moderate Distraction.” Apple’s Siri sits firmly in the middle of the scale, with a ranking of 3.4 for “High Distraction.” At the very top of the scale, with a rank of 4.6 for “Very High Distraction,” sits the Mazda 6 vehicle.

According to the survey, mental distraction can last for as long as 27 seconds after a driver has used their hands-free or voice-activated system.

“The lasting effects of mental distraction pose a hidden and pervasive danger that would likely come as a surprise to most drivers,” said Peter Kissinger, President and CEO of the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety. “The results indicate that motorists could miss stop signs, pedestrians and other vehicles while the mind is readjusting to the task of driving.”

However, MacRumors notes that the survey did not include the most recent in-dash systems such as CarPlay or Android Auto.
