Every time Apple releases a new iPhone/iPad, there are a few voices that can’t help comment on the fact that the devices’ design has stayed the same throughout the years. Most of us don’t mind this aspect at all, but others would like to see a more futuristic smartphone/tablet being launched on the market.

A couple of newly uncovered patents seem to indicate that Apple might be doing exactly that – working on reshaping its iconic devices. The two patents are called “Curved battery cells for portable electronic devices” and “Non-rectangular batteries for portable electronic devices”. They both detail a battery prototype unseen before.

The two filings elaborate details related to a slimmer and curved battery design that will certainly end up changing the form factor of the future iPhones/iPads. The patents go on to represent actual cells and the manner in which they could be powering curved or differently shaped looking devices. The design Apple is apparently cooking up in its development labs will feature a flexible pouch that will enclose the cell layers.

The pouch will then be subjected to 0.13 kilogram-force per square millimeters and 85 degrees Celsius heat. Last but not least, the resulted pouch will be placed between curved plates so it can take the above mentioned curved shape.

From the actual patent:

“The curve is formed to facilitate efficient use of space inside a portable electronic device. For example, the curve may be formed at one or more ends of the battery cell to allow the battery cell to occupy a curved and/or rounded space within the enclosure of a laptop computer, tablet computer, mobile phone, personal digital assistant, digital camera, portable media player and/or other type of battery-powered electronic device.”

With all these details set, is it possible that we’re going to see a curved iPhone/iPad in the near future?
