I am currently working with an iPod touch3; 2nd gen that is jail broken and operating on firmware 4.1.

Can anyone tell me if it's worth the trouble to upgrade to the next available untethered firmware?

Unfortunately I am not versed enough in that subject to say however can say Welcome to the forum!!!!

Unfortunately it's not possible to update to the "next untetherable firmware." The last untethered firmware is 4.3.3... and Apple stopped signing that quite a few months ago. The only firmware you can upgrade at this point in 5.0.1... and the only option at this point is a tethered JB.

Bummer. I guess I'll keep the device as is pending the next untethered release. I know the team is hard at work so I'll patiently await an update.
