MacRumors reports today on the mystery of the self-combusting iPhone, which occurred last November, when, those of you with long memories might recall, an iPhone 4 was reported to have self combusted onboard an airplane that was landing in Sydney, Australia. At the time, it was uncertain what had caused the potentially dangerous incident, but now ZDNet.com.au reports that Australian government officials have finally finished investigating the matter, and have concluded that the iPhone started smoking when a misplaced screw punctured the battery cover and caused a short circuit, which in turn made the battery overheat. The authorities said that the errant screw was not a standard iPhone screw, but instead the result of a “botched screen-replacement job from a non-authorised service centre.”The screw was originally at the bottom of the iPhone, next to the 30-pin connector, and somehow got loose and found its way to the battery compartment.
