Standing in line at the local PO I have my iPhone, of course, with no Wi-Fi, naturally, but I am keyed into LTE and I see max bubbles. So I run a speed test.

After I put my socks back on, I studied the results. They are: 55.27 down and 18.21 up. This is well over twice the fastest speeds I have seen with our Comcast account at home.

You see that kind of cellular data action? Are we approaching the point where all outside connection equipment can be carried in our pockets?

It depends on region/reception. There are active carrier "hacks" that does speed up LTE devices a fair amount for some because of their region. Others see no or negligible change because of peak hours and volume of users. With portable devices outselling full fledged devices at a nominal level, phone companies may not be as reluctant to offer faster LTE speeds to increase their consumer volumes
