2012 was a profitable year when the iPhone is concerned, as new data coming from IDC seems to indicate. According to their statistics, Apple’s iconic smartphone now manages to hold a tight grip on 25.1% of the global market.

The iPhone has a little bit of conquering left, before it takes the number one spot from fellow competitor Samsung that has been a global market leader for some time. The other companies that make up the top 5 are Nokia, HTC and RIM.

Overall, the iPhone shipments increased with a good 46.9% in 2012, reaching 136.8 million units, as compared to 2011, when the company managed to sell 93.1 million devices. Samsung on, the other hand, swiftly managed to take the first place as the number one device seller, increasing its business by 129.1%. The company also managed to increase its market share, even though 2012 was a year the company had to sink in the repercussion of Apple lawsuits. In spite of that, market shares rose from 19% to 39.6%.

Moving on, the other companies in the top didn’t experience growth. Nokia underwent a downfall, which cost the company 54.6% of their precious shipments. The Finnish might have snatched the third position but they contributed with only 6, 4% of the total smartphones sales in 2012.

HTC and RIM also saw a collapse in business. HTC lost 25.2% percent in 2012, while RIM experienced even more deterioration by losing 36.4% to the competition. If Apple keeps this growth rate up, we’ll probably going to see the American company overtake the first position, as global dominator.
