AppleInsider reports that according to The Korea Herald, Apple is planning to make the next iPhone even more water and dust resistant than the iPhone 7, bringing it up to the standard of an IP68 rating.

The improvements should mean that the phone will be able to remain submerged at 1.5 meters (4.92 feet) for 30 minutes. With the iPhone 7’s current IP67 rating it can only remain submerged at 1 meter (3.28 feet) for the same length of time.

While this might not seem like much of a difference, IP68 is clearly a very high standard, as currently only the Samsung Galaxy S7 has that rating. All other water-resistant smartphones have the same IP67 rating as the current iPhone 7, which was the first iPhone to be officially certified as water-resistant.

It is thought that both Apple and Samsung are using waterproof tapes rather than waterproof adhesive, as the former is simpler to repair.
