You can share an apple ID but I ended up having to make my husband his own account for iMessage and iCloud.

Thanks for all your help folks I'm really impressed with your helpfulness !

We've got it working now but I don't know what the problem was.

I turned on the iMessage option on my wife's phone then turned mine off and back on and now it's working.

Pleased I've discovered this forum now.
