The latest problems with hardware recently surfaced. The version of iTunes that is required to work with iOS10 is incompatible with older versions of Windows (Vista and older) and OS X (versions prior to Mavericks).

I've seen the iMazing app suggested as a possible alternative to iTunes on several forums, although I haven't used it myself.
