How would I retrieve a photo that is my home screen photo if it's not saved in my photos.

There is no way. If it is a memorable picture and you want to keep it, just hold down on an app like you want to delete it, swipe over to the empty page, and take a screenshot. The 4 apps on the dock will show, but it will be saved to your photos. If it is just some background, well, I don't know what to tell you, sorry.

then once its saved to your camera roll crop it and then take another screenshot that will get eliminate the 4 icons

Once it's in your camera roll you can just crop and save.
