Help selecting custom ringtones

i created a custom ringtone using two different methods. when i plug my phone (iphone4s) into itunes i see the ringtone under the ringtone tab on my phone (i had previously dragged it onto my phone from itunes library) the problem is when i go to settings-sounds it does not show up on the phone. this is very frustrating. i love my new phone but apple makes everything very difficult, android was sooo easy!
