Because of my non functioning Apple maps I am thinking of doing a factory reset to see if that solves the problem. I
recently upgraded to IOS6. If I factory reset, will I be forced into having IOS7??

Restoring fresh copies of iOS on A5+ devices will only result in iOS 7.

You should be able to reset in settings but if you hook up to the computer via itunes it will update.

Sorry to be dumb , but is a 4S an A5+ device?

Try google maps as an alternate download from app store

A5 refers to the on-board chipset, a.k.a. the processor. A5+ devices are the iPhone 4S/iPad 2 and newer devices. A4 refers to the iPhone 4/iPad 1 and below devices.

Yes I have that app and its fine but it doesn't link to my Next Buses programme or Met Office, both i use quite a lot. Might have to suffer IOS 7 then :-(
