Every time i try to sync to backup it stops mid-way and gives a message that it couldn't be backed

mid-way and gives a message that it couldn't be backed -up because the phone disconnected... but nothing was touched or disconnected. I've tried it over many times.

I plug directly into my laptop at the USB port
It hangs up at step 2 of 7 with the disconnected message.

Have you tried any other USB ports on your computer, just to rule out any problem with the USB port you've been using?

Yes, I tried both USB ports and different cords. Ipad backs-up fine so I don't think its the computer- it seems to be the phone.
