Can't get sim to work

My daughter has given me her iPhone 4s I have got the same phone but mine is faulty. She restoed hers to factory setting but when I put my sim in it my stuff doesn't come up have tried to do it on I tunes but cant do it on their if anyone could help me please.

Are you sure that the iPhone isn't locked to the carrier your daughter used? Have you contacted your cellular carrier to let them know about the switch?

We were both with orange contract finished about 12months ago and we had them unlocked and both use Virgin monthly sim in them.
