Buying an iPhone solely to use over Wifi - Do I need to get one that is unlocked?

If I am buying an iPhone just so I can use it over Wifi around town and not connected to any wireless phone service provider do I need to get one that is unlocked?

Personally I would just get an iPod touch. Thats what they are designed to do. Then you don't have to worry about activating it or having problems every time you do an update.

Good question, T.... and I "think" the answer is No. But perhaps others here will clarify. I plan to use my iPhone 4 next year as an iPod w/ wi-fi, and I've been told it will work without any action on my part, except to drop my ATT plans from it over to my new iPhone 5. Will see. I suppose a simple trip to the ATT store will answer my (and your) question.
