Bt openzone and other free public wifi

I have an iPhone 4S on Vodafone (UK). When I am out and about in London, I am often able to pick up free wifi networks such as BT or cloud.

When I connect to these, the phone looks as if it is on wifi but no data can be sent or received, ie the Internet just doesn't work at all. I am wondering if there is a setting I need to change somewhere so I can use these free networks?

By the way, I also have an iPad 1 which has the exact same problem, so maybe it's an apple thing?

You need to be a BT bill payer to access the BT openzone...basically it's free B.T customers and subscribers...

Oh I never knew that. I am not a bt customer so that would account for it. Thanks for the information.

And you need to register with the cloud...
I'm on orange and get open zone with my package, check with vodiphone, you might already have it or they can add it on
